  3. an exchange of opinions between two or more people, all opposed to each other. the essence of a debate is differing viewpoints. if there are no differences, there is no debate - there is consensus. a debate can be educated or violent and all things in between. sometimes used to describe a discussion between two or more people - erroneously. a discussion is not a debate. in a debate each person has a turn to express his or her views, and the remainder stay quiet, waiting their turn. in a discussion everyone talks at the same time.
