One of the indispensable tools of photography. Flashes can be external (also known as an “off-camera or external flash”) or built-in. Most compact cameras, analog or digital, have built-in flashes. Advanced prosumer point and shoot cameras and Digtal SLR’s use an off-camera flash. Off-camera flashes like those coming from Canon’s or Nikon’s Speedlight series employ their own variation of TTL (through the lens) algorithm that determines the intensity and duration of the strobe. Some external flashes can be triggered optically. Optical triggers are essentially light sensitive diodes that can be triggered by other flashes. Another flash trigger is radio frequency – in lieu of the off-camera flash on the camera’s hotshoe, a radio frequency transmitter is placed to receive the trigger signal coming from the camera. A radio frequency receiver is mounted on the off-camera’s shoe to receive the transmitter’s signal to let the external flash emit a specific amount of light.
