The Lower Peninsula of Michigan is shaped like a mitten and many times people hold their hand like a mitten and point to the spot on their hand that corresponds to the area they live. There is long (8 km) bridge that connects the Upper Peninsula to the Lower Peninsula. The bridge is the third longest suspension bridge in the world. People who live in the Upper Peninsula sometimes call the people who live on the Lower Peninsula ‘Trolls’. This is meant to be a slightly insulting funny comment referring to the fact they live south of the bridge or ‘under’ the bridge. The reference is to the children’s story ‘The Billy Goats Gruff’. The story is about a troll who lived under the bridge and wouldn’t let the goats cross and how the goats finally made it across. The troll was ugly, mean, and stupid. The goats were smart and clever… that’s why it’s insulting.
