Southern white Americans used it immediately after the Civil War to invoke the memories of a time of gracious living, social order, and prosperity, A majority of the african-americans of the time disliked the term and felt it was a reference to slavery and the plantation lifestyle. Once those living through the Civil War died, the term continued to be used. Now the term is used to celebrate only the things about the Old South which might be considered good, such as Southern chivalry, iced tea, and southern cooking. Products are advertised as having "genuine Old South goodness".
