regions of the u s

  1. When you ask an American where they live, you may be told the region they are from. Many of the regions overlap, the boundaries can be confusing, and some states actually lie in several regions. Many regions have a distinct cultural flavor and identity that makes that area of the United States a little different from other areas. The U.S. government has official regions, but the regions as defined by the people don’t always agree with the Government’s definition.
    Here are the Regions:

The pacific northwest region includes northern California, Oregon, Washington, and the western part of Idaho

The northwest region includes Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Sometimes Montana and Wyoming will be included.

The pacific coast (or The Coast if you are from the western portion of the U.S.) is the coastline areas of California, Oregon, and Washington.

The southwest is New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, California, and Nevada and sometimes Utah and Colorado.

The mid rockiesrefer to NE Utah and W Wyoming

The northern rockies refer to NE Washington, NE and central Idaho, NW Wyoming, and W Montana

The southern rockies refer to New Mexico, Colorado, and S Wyoming

The rockiesusually refers to the mountainous area that stretches from Canada to Mexico in Idaho, Washington, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico.

The midwest consists of Illinois, Nebraska, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Indiana, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, and Wisconsin.

The great lakes region is Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New York

the south refers to Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, parts of Eastern Texas, the river-mouth areas of Arkansas, and the Florida panhandle.

The South may also mean ' the deep south ’ states of louisiana, alabama, mississippi, georgia, and south carolina.

The east coastor ‘atlantic seaboard’refers to New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Washington DC, Florida, Maine and Vermont.

The east coast may also be used to refer to just the areas in the ‘northeast corridor’- the strip along the coast from Boston to Washington, D.C.

New York – Usually means New York City metropolition area

    D.C. – Washington DC

    L.A. – Los Angeles

Frisco Bay or the bay area – San Francisco and the surrounding area.

The Keys – the section of Florida south of the mainland that consists of a series of islands.
