The Southern United States is commonly referred to as the South. It is a large distinct area of the southeast section of the U.S. The area’s heritage and history of Native American, Spanish, English and African culture; the pre-civil war reliance on slave labor, and the lingering influence of the Confederacy after the American Civil War has created a unique culture. This area has developed its own style of food, music, and literature; unique customs; and a definite and distinct dialect and pronunciation of English. The ‘Southern Drawl’ is incredibly distinctive and instantly marks an American as from “the South”. There is the ‘Deep South’ and ‘The South’. 'The South' usually means Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, parts of Eastern Texas, the river-mouth areas of Arkansas, and the Florida panhandle.
