Usually referred to by americans as the “u s ”or “america”. Originally the U.S. was formed from thirteen English colonies, on July 4th, 1776 they issued the declaration of independence. Today, the U.S. is made up of 50 states, washington d c and several territories. The states consist of : 48 continental states - or the lower 48, alaska and hawaii. The Lower 48 are located between Canada and mexico. alaskais roughly twice the size of texas and located between canada and russia. hawaiiis actually a group of islands located in the pacific ocean. The territories are scattered across the pacificand the caribbean. washington d c(district of columbia) is the nation’s capital, but contrary to common perception is not a state but rather a federal district. The ‘fourth of july’or ‘independence day’is the National Holiday that is celebrated yearly to commemorate America’s Independence from great britain.
